Re: Floodlit Firsts
In May it will (barring thick cloud or rain) remain light enough to, say, read a newspaper at least 1/2 hour after sunset - and "lighting up" time (when you were obliged to switch on car headlights) has always been 1/2 hour after sunset. So a match on May 15th could kick off at 7.30, finish at 9.15 ...

Hibs v Leeds attendance 1968
I have a feeling I may have raised this topic before but couldn't find it so here we go - The Hibs v Leeds Fairs Cup match on 10th January 1968 has an attendance of 30,000 (a suspiciously round figure) recorded in a few places, including the London Hearts site. However I was sure I'd read a higher f...

My suspicion is that football clubs were (possibly wilfully) ignorant of the long-term health of their players in those days. They were only interested in keeping them fit to play till their mid 30s and weren't much concerned beyond that point. Admittedly, players didn't look after themselves - but ...

I've reached 51 and have so far (touch wood) only lost 1 person fairly close to me of my age or younger. 3 grandparents died in their 80s, 1 in their 50s. 2 parents/parents in laws passed on in their 60s, others going strong in their 70s. Males currently have a 5% chance of shuffling off before 50, ...

Another ex-player sadly taking an early trip back to the dressing room. Footballers don't seem to be long lived on the whole - example, 2 of Hearts' terrible trio didn't even make it to 50. Can anyone think of a well-known ex-player who's still living in their 90s? So we'd be talking about someone w...

Well perhaps it's a missed opportunity rather than a bad result. Lithuania have a reasonable home record - they tend to beat the "minnows", draw with the middle class sides (like Scotland) and lose to the top drawer teams by the odd goal. Our own record in Lithuania is now won 1 drawn 2 lost 1 so it...

Yes I agree the Souness revolution was a good thing financially - but if you look at the way European results went it coincided with a decline in standards. Dundee United reached the UEFA final in the 1st year of the said revolution, Rangers and Hearts reached quarter finals in the next 2 seasons bu...

Rangers fans are fond of pointing this out with reference to Celtic's European Cup win in 1967. I suppose the curious thing is - how did Scottish club football pick itself up after entering a serious decline in the mid 70s? Was it an effect of the national team's relative success in the World Cup at...

Aberdeen and Dundee United had come close a few times in the years immediately before their golden era - for example, Aberdeen lost 1-2 to Molenbeek (then a decent team) in 1977, 2-3 to Dusseldorf in 78 and 1-2 to Eintracht Frankfurt in 79. United went down 0-1 to Standard Liege in 78, beat Anderlec...

If I'm allowed to plug a couple of sites www.scoreshelf.com and http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/ Bert's site shows how Scotland was consistently in the top 10 for European club performances from the 60s to the mid 70s, and again throughout most of the 80s. The lowest point we reached was in...

Something that's been forgotten here is that in terms of cash coming into the game Scotland is actually far better off than most of the nations we're struggling to compete with. Sure we can't be on a level playing field with England, Italy, France, Germany and Spain given the economics of the game t...

Scottish teams in Europe - or should I say - out of Europe
Once again it appears the passports can be put away for another year, almost before the season has properly started - only Rangers are left and I wonder how long they will last. Any bets against them finishing last in whatever CL group they end up in? The performances of Celtic have been particularl...
