Re: George Allan
Did a wee bit more digging. Managed to track down a Bo'ness line-up from one of the early season dates that an 'Allan' turned out for Leith. 25 August 1894. Leith listed Allan at outside right against Clyde. On same day, Bo'ness home to Slamanan Rovers - Allan listed at right-back. I think that supp...

Re: George Allan
Just the one. Dumbarton at home the following week (6 April). 1-1 draw. Unfortunately it's the one League game from that season that I haven't been able to track down a line-up for. Re the registration 30/3/95. That would suggest he was possibly registered to play in the Celtic game that day as the ...

Re: George Allan
I have most of theLeith Athletic lineups from 1894/95 & 1895/96 but having looked at them again to try to help out with your query I'm now wondering if he was ever signed by Leith Athletic. My reasoning is a couple of bits of "evidence": 1) George was a central defender (right half) but all the line...

Re: John, James & Abraham. Meaney playing careers
Realise it's some time since original post & thread started but only just come across it while cross-checking some Leith Athletic research. I have a fair amount of info re John's spells at Leith Athletic including at least one team photo & one other infividual photo. He was indeed Irish - I have him...

Re: Leith Athleic line up: May 27, 1899 (Rosebery Charity Cu
I visited Uphall Cemetery about 18 months back to look at the memorial. Very impressive & well-maintained. Leith Athletic played Newcastle United (who had just won English First Division) at Easter Road on 23 April 1907 in a benefit match for his family. Current incarnation of Leith Athletic had an ...

Meant to add that the scorer wasn't John Walker - he went to Hearts in 1898 (later with Lincoln City). It was Wullie Walker who had two spells at Leith on either side of playing for Liverpool. Tragically he died in January 1907 after being fatally injured playing for Leith.

Re: Leith Athleic line up: May 27, 1899 (Rosebery Charity Cu
The game was definitely played at Logie Green (per advert in Friday night's Evening News which refers to "Logie Green, Canonmills"). It KO'd at 4pm with an Edinburgh v Leith schoolboys match on first at 3pm. I have it as a crowd of 5,000 (Gate £140). Walker scored the only goal early in the second h...

Re: Definition of 'scrimmage'
I reckon Andy spot on there with "stramash" - first word I thought of too when I read the thread. Good old Arhur Montford! Going by my research over the years the term "scrimmage" is invariably used when a goal is scored from very close range with numerous players in the vicinity & the reporter does...

Yesterday afternoon the East of Scotland FA's Football Nation Qualifying Cup final was played at the Oriam at Riccarton - Lowland League Spartans beat East of Scotland League Lothian Thistle HV 2-1. I'm pretty sure this will have been the first men's Senior (1st team) football final played indoors -...

Re: John or Jacky or Johnny Peat
Sorry I don't have date of birth etc for him but I have him as 'Jack' Peat & signing for Leith Athletic on 18 January 1954 having previously been (possibly still at then) Cowdenbeath. Leith had withdrawn from the Scottish League but as they had retained their SFA membership were able to enter a side...

Newspaper Team Line-ups - Convention Query
When researching team line-ups for games in the early days of football & probably through as far as the late 1930's in newspapers I've sometimes come across a surname being shown in inverted commas - e.g. Smith, Jones, "McTavish" ........ I was never really sure why but recently I noted one such cas...
