Re: Question for Scottish re Saxone Youth Club

Reply from Killie historian John Livingston via Richard Cairns. "There was a kind of tie-up in the mid-1950's with Kilmarnock amateurs, as they trained at Rugby Park under Jimmy Maxwell, then there was a tie-up with Saxone from very late 1950's into early 1960's, then with Bellfield Boys Club from a...

Re: Question for Scottish re Saxone Youth Club

If Richard Cairns sees this he may be able to give you an answer. I'm not aware of any formal tie-in though it was an obvious logical progression for talented local youngsters. I worked in the Saxone shoe shop in King Street as a Saturday job for much of my last year at school, which was also Killie...

IMPORTANT NOTICE - FUTURE OF THIS SITE

After fourteen years operating and maintaining this site and ten years of the forum, I find that, regrettably, pressure of other projects means that I will no longer be able to devote the time necessary to keep it up to date. Therefore I have decided, reluctantly, not to renew the domain name when i...

Re: CHALLENGE CUP FINAL

Broadwood would have been a better venue I think. Not necessarily more of a crowd (a cup final will draw out supporters wherever it is and the current league placings of both clubs always meant this was going to be a tough one to pull in a decent gate) but at least easier travelling for both sets of...

Re: Brora Rangers

the Encyclopedia of British Football book from the '70s mentions it, and no doubt further back Just dug out my 1974 edition (bought with the money which was earmarked for course books and self-justified on the basis that "well, it is history after all"). Some of the allocations make surprising read...

Re: Football clubs and politics

Those were individuals of course and as I indicated above, any footballers, any sports person or indeed anyone in the public eye is perfectly entitled to express their views as long as they don't proclaim to be speaking on behalf of a club or institution (always presuming of course that they aren't)...

Re: Football clubs and politics

I dont think football clubs generally can afford to be choosy when commercial income is available. At QoS both Yes Scotland and Better Together paid to display banners in the early part of the season (they wete hung side by side). I am surprised some mischief-maker didn't take the opportunity to ha...

Re: Football clubs and politics

Going a long way back, Thomas Gibson-Poole, Mayor of Middlesbrough and Boro chairman was Tory candidate for Middlesbrough in the second election of 1910. He tried to arrange to bribe Sunderland in a game shortly before the election, thinking this would help his chances of success, and instructed his...

Re: Football clubs and politics

I've seen advertising hoardings at many grounds. Usually it's the local MP or MSP. They don't specifically mention party but the ads are in party colours. Only party-specific ones I've seen are SNP in senior football & Labour in juniors. Also some trade unions in non-league. Whitehawk, near me, for ...
