Re: Some come-back by Leith Athletic

Reading this, I have a terrible vision of the poor wee stringer who was sent to cover this game, trying to get a reasonable description of all 14 goals into a 100-word report. And, did "Junior" get signed, after scoring his hat-trick?

Re: Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics

As an "old school" sports writer, I have a jaundiced view of statistics. I sort of believe, the likes of the OPTA figures, when published by newspapers, are just a way for today's molly-coddled hacks to not have to fill as much blank newsprint as in days of yore. If you get possession stats, suppli...

Re: Ending of amateur status in England 1974

The change came in from the start of the 1974-75 season. The question therefore is: when did that season start? Given season 1973-74 was a World Cup Year, and the final of that competition was held on 7 July, 1974, 8 July, 1974 might be a good bet for the start date. Of course, England didn't quali...

Jim McFadzean RIP

I have just completed obituaries on the late Jim McFadzean, who won Scottish League Championship medals with Hearts in 1960 and Kilmarnock in 1965. Jim scored on of the goals in Killie's 5-1 second leg win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1964-65 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, as Killie, having lost the fi...

Re: Tommy Bryceland

Wow!!

I just love that St Mirren kit picture, as posted by Scottish FA.

I reckon that might catch-on with today's trendy young Buddies. Mind you, not the worst shorts design I've seen, I reckon Scotland's "sussies" shorts from the eighties still take th biscuit.

Re: Tommy Bryceland

Obituary should be in tomorrow's Herald. How did such a fine player manage to not even get an Under-23 cap? I realise, having your career run alongside that of John White is going to cut down on full international chances, but, he surely should have played for the Under-23s, or even the Scottish Le...

Re: New Scotland strip

Well, a 10-0 win first time on - I think we should give the pink kit a wee run of games.

Re: New Scotland strip

Or, the SFA could switch their kit deal to Macron, the Italian company which supplies the Scotland rugby kit.

It too has a bit of tartan in it, but, done with Italian fashion flair - it looks good and the tartan effect is subtle.

Scottish FA wrote: And Matt, since you're always banging on about equal rights for the women's team, our next 'A team' match is actually this weekend, in Paisley. Fair enough Andy, however, I don't see a mass turn-out of the Tartan Army for that one. It will be some time before a couple of regiment...

New Scotland strip

Not the worst Scotland strip I have seen, and, as someone who played for Ayr Rugby Club, I can assure the Tartan Army, there is nothing wrong with wearing a pink shirt. I wonder about the timing, however. OK, I realise it is quite close to Christmas, but, the reality is, our A team is not due to pl...

Re: Making Scottish Football Better

Our attitude to international fixtures will HAVE to change. I am not exactly sure when it comes in, it may not be until after World Cup 2018, but, the UEFA international league system is coming. This will mean we will no longer be playing friendlies, but, competitive games against international tea...

Re: Making Scottish Football Better

I liked bluedragon's suggestion of "A Scottish League XI". Let's call them the Scottish Thistles, or something similar. This might be an Under-23 team, or, at least having the bulk of the team chosen from guys who have come through the national age group system but have yet to be capped, augmented ...

Re: Football Event at National Library of Scotland

Andy, couldn't agree more; IF Great Britain can win, it will be great, less so, if Scotland/Dunblane loses - this is the Torygraph, Daily Heil view.

Scottish FA wrote: I'm really sorry about this but I can't make the Library event next Saturday. I've been offered tickets to the Davis Cup Final in Ghent that weekend, and with me being from Dunblane and two local boys playing in what is effectively a World Cup final, it is too good an opportunity...

Re: Making Scottish Football Better

I am glad I started this thread, it has produced some excellent replies, and, while I do not always agree with what is said - it is good to talk. I had a look at the make-up of the Premiership match-day squads for the last round of games, on 8 November, and was surprised at the results. These were:...
