Re: Leith Athletic's Grounds
From David Speed Sorry I do not know the exact site, but the ground belonged to Leith Hawthorn, a club sponsored by Hawthorn & Company, marine engineers and shipbuilders, which was based from at least 1881 at Sheriff Brae and then West Pier, Granton, and finally Western Harbour until taken over by ...

Leith Athletic's Grounds
I've been researching the history of Leith Athletic (1887 to 1957) for the last few years & I've been able to trace the locations of all the old grounds they played at in a nomadic existence except one. I've traced Hawkhill Recreation Grounds (1887), Bank Park (1889), Beechwood Park (1894), Logie Gr...

Re: John Hughes of the SFA
In the press of the time he was described as "honorary manager" & "acting unpaid manager" & his first task was to whittle a list of 50 possibles down to a squad of 13 for the Cup tie. He was effectively the club's manager for the 4 matches played in January 1954, the club's only games that season -...

Re: John Hughes of the SFA
During his PFA stewardship John Hughes also had a short spell as manager of Leith Athletic & indeed he was in charge for the club's final game. Due to ongoing financial difficulties Leith Athletic refused to take part in Division C for season 1953/54 & were subsequently expelled from the Scottish Le...

Re: Floodlit Firsts
I'd always believed that the first 'modern day' floodlight match in Edinburgh was Hibs v Hearts in October 1954 but my ongoing research into the history of Leith Athletic suggests that was not the case. Leith installed floodlights at their Old Meadowbank ground in December 1952 - four 47 feet high p...

Re: Leith Athletic 1901
All my research has been done via local & national newspapers of the time & any minute books, etc are sadly long gone so I can't be sure but certainly the high rent at Hawkhill had been a factor in both spells there. Leith's financial problems were more widespread than that though & it's clear from ...

Re: Leith Athletic 1901
I can provide a bit of background from my own research. Leith originally played at Hawkhill Recreation Grounds from 1887 but then moved a short distance to Bank Park then Beechwood Park (basically adjacent but not the same park as I've read in places). When a new railway line was being built into Le...

Re: Scottish Referee & Scottish Umpire
Thanks for the info & advice - much appreciated. I've been in touch with the British Newspaper Library at Colindale in N.London & they advise that they have the full set of the Scottish Referee although the volumes for 1893, 94, 98, 99 & 1901 have been deemed 'unfit' for use. I'll certainly check ou...

Scottish Referee & Scottish Umpire
In connection with an ongoing research project I'm hoping to be able to look at the Scottish Referee/Scottish umpire publication which was around from the late 1800's for a while. Anyone know if either the National Library of Scotland or the Mitchell Library have this publication available for resea...

Re: Division C - the last few results
Andy Brilliant piece of research - well done. Just one error I noticed relating to a Leith Athletic match in the 1951/52 season & I'm guessing it's a simple "typo" error: Leith Athletic 0 v 3 East Fife 'A' Grid shows date as 26 August but that was a Sunday - match was played at Old Meadowbank on Tue...
