Young players joining professional clubs

I am hoping that someone can help me confirm, correct and/or improve my understanding of how young Scottish players became professional footballers on leaving school in the late 1950’s/1960’s. ENGLISH CLUBS My understanding is that Scottish youngsters could not become an apprentice at an English clu...

Re: Three penalties

Going off at a slight tangent I am wondering if anyone has heard of any goalkeepers scoring a hat-trick of penalties. In 1975 Kilbirnie Ladeside were missing penalties and gave ‘keeper Jim Marner a chance. They found he was rather good and gave him the job permanently. He scored 13 in a season inclu...

By the way, I see that you have the elder brother as George Brown Key. This is another Doug Lamming mistake, he was plain George Key, born 1878.
Thanks again Andy. I will correct the record.

Ian St John

I was helping “ Gabe ” review some pages of the RSSSF Scotland pages. One thing led to another and I checked Ian St John’s birth record on the ScotlandsPeople website to find a record of John St John born in 1938 and registered in Dalziel. I contacted “ J.S. Norway ”, this forum’s Liverpool expert, ...

Re: Junior International records

Thanks Andy. I think we had Willie Key in the “ not absolutely sure ” column as we could not see the link from Vale of Clyde to Queen’s Park. Thank you for giving us our 57th Junior/Full Internationalist. The Key brothers International/Cup record at both grades is very impressive and probably unique...

Neil Browns UK transfer website does not list him so he couldn't have made a first team appearance.
John Litster's record show his only first team matches were two appearances in the Summer Cup that was played in May 1964.

Re: Queen of the South 63/64

Thanks Bluedragon, he must have been a trialist too and signed a couple of days after the game. I think some of those dates were taken from a weekly magazine that used to give transfer news. Therefore the date in this case may be a few days later than the actual date of signing. I see the Evening T...

Re: John McFarlane

Was there a max age to play for a junior club like Shawfield Juniors in 1924-26? Normally I would say a junior player is under 20. Junior football did not refer to the ages of the players. " Junior " simply means that it ranked below Senior football. As far as I am aware, but others will know more,...

I was @ the Scotland vs. Brazil in 1966 & had been given a brand new stop watch as a present. Stevie Chalmers` goal came after 38 seconds. Pele`s equaliser came after 15min 3sec.
Thank you. We will put Stevie Chalmers into second place at 38 seconds.

Re: Fastest Scotland international goal

Gabe and I have been looking at some goal times for the RSSSF Scotland records. We came across this thread and thought we should post what we believe are the fastest goal times. We have only listed those where we have found a source that gives a time with seconds. 1. (Match 244) 19th May 1955 AUSTRI...

He played for Hearts (1892-98), Liverpool (1898-1902), Rangers (1902-05) and Morton (1905-06). Was he on loan to Ayr Parkhouse (28-30/4-1906) and Royal Albert (2-3/5-1906) ? If so, did he play any games? Ayrshire Cup Final 28 April 1906 Ayr 1 (1) v Parkhouse (0) 0 Parkhouse had a left back named “ ...
