Birmingham City v Irvine Meadow XI

I am trying to find out the attendance at a floodlit friendly played at St Andrews, Birmingham on 16th March 1959 between Birmingham City and Irvine Meadow XI. Apparently Meadow were invited to fly down for the game as the top Junior team of the day. I have seen details of the match, press reports, ...

Re: 3pm kick offs

Another thought! Although many clubs had floodlights in the 1950's I am not sure when the practice started in afternoon games of switching on the lights for the second half or at the start - even though they wern't needed - to allow players to gradually acclimatise to the artifical light as the natu...

Re: Hampden Park attendance records

I have had a look at the famous photograph and while I note your observation we have to ask ourselves how did Colin Stein get into that postion in the first place? I had a look at the Glasgow Herald's report from the following Monday thinking that the journalist would have had the benefit of solemn ...

Re: Ally Robertson

Thanks for everyone's help. I now know that Ally Robertson played in all five Scotland games in the tournament and Jimmy Brown played in the first four but was ruled out of the 3rd/4th place play-off game by injury.

Re: Hampden Park attendance records

I was on the West terrace so about 3 miles from the incident and 130,000+ screaming "PENALTY" more in hope than expectation because Stein had taken off BEFORE Labone stuck his leg out. You can see from the pictures Stein is far too high in the air to have been tackled. It was really a pretty dull g...

Re: Jimmy McMorran

Jim McMorran (never Jimmy locally) was a member of an outstanding Muirkirk JS school team. He did indeed play for Villa and was on the verges of the Under-23 team, but never called-up. He then returned to Scotland with Third Lanark, before going to Walsall. As far as I know, he remained in the Blac...

Re: Ally Robertson

Many thanks for the quick replies it is much appreciated. However, the answer has generated another question! J Brown (Aston Villa) who is in the squad is another player I am looking at but did not know until your reply that he had played or at least been selected at this level. I wonder if you can ...

Re: Hampden Park attendance records

Mnay thanks indeed for the answer - great! I was close! My particular interest in the 1970 game is Wille Carr playing his third International. My memory says that was the game where Briain Labone upended Colin Stein in spectacular fashion in the penalty area but no penalty! Thanks again for the answ...

Ally Robertson

I am sure that Ally Robertson (West Bromwich Albion and Wolves) was selected to a Scottish youth international squad but I am not sure if he played. I think Graeme Souness may have been in the same squad. If anyone has access to these records to confirm if, when and how many times he played at this ...

Hampden Park attendance records

I am trying to establish where in the list of Hampden Park all-time attendance records the crowd at the 1970 Scotland v England sits. I have got the attendance as 137,438. From what I have been able to glean it might be the sixth largest but I would appreciate if someone could correct or confirm. Th...

Re: Jimmy McMorran

Great - many thanks.

I have a report that he was in the running for the Under-23 team which beat England at Pittodrie, Aberdeen. It was on 28th February but I am not sure what year! It sounds as if at best he was a travelling reserve and was not capped but I am not sure.

Jimmy McMorran

I am trying to establish representative honours won by Jimmy McMorran. I am sure he was a Schools International and think he may have been called up but did not play at Under 23 level. His details are: James Wilson McMorran Date of Birth 29th October 1942 Born Muirkirk Went to Aston Villa as a Junio...

I had a look on the Scorland's People site and it looks like the T is for Tweedie but no mention of a second middle name.

Re: Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists

I am pleased to see the name of Hugh Long on the list. He is one of three full Scottish Internationals to have played for Worcester City FC and I know the club will be delighted to hear this news. He joined City from Clyde and was described by the manager of the time - who had a reputation as a succ...
