Pursuant to information kindly provided by Annan Athletic FC, the status (i.e. as per 13 August 2008) regarding Galabank is as follows:

Annan are awaiting the official approved crowd from the local authorities. Currently this stands at 3,500 but there has been a lot of improvements undertaken and almost certainly this will be reduced to arround 3,000 but the authorities will confirm this in the not too distant future.

On Saturday we had 1,152 for our opening league fixture. I believe the biggest crowd was against Brechin City in the Scottish Cup when 1,550 were present for the replay at Annan.

The Scottish League Review gives that crowd as 1,059 as does Rothmans.

I am sure David will provide us with the correct record crowd... Unfortunately I do not have the two references at hand right now. According to a short history of the club a Scottish Cup replay vs Berwick attracted 1,650 (must have been in January 1996).

I'm afraid I can't. Or at least not one that isn't hedged with qualifications. There are three contenders.

The crowd of 1,650 for Berwick (not Brechin) given on their website is cited as 1,056 in annuals for that season. Normally I accept what appears to be the more 'accurate' figure but in this case it's the same figures transposed so it's difficult to say. However I am sceptical about the 1,650 figure. It's too much like a round figure, it's far in excess of anything else ever recorded for Galabank and it's almost four times as many as watched the first match a week beforehand.

There was a reported crowd of 1,250 for Annan's first ever Scottish Cup tie v Stranraer in December 1979 but Rothman's gives it as 1,050. Again, this is almost a round figure (I'm as sceptical about crowds ending in 500 or 50 as I am of those with three zeroes). Checking my own records shows that while I have 1,250 now my initial figure was 1,050 before being corrected. Unfortunately it isn't possible for me to keep records of the reason and/or source every time I amend a figure.

The crowd for the cup tie v Morton in 2006-07 was 1,206. That's the third possibility.

However, if Annan maintain their fine start to life in the league there's every chance there will be a new and verifiable record before the season's end.

In which case I'll go for the 1,206 option...

That's the highest UNCHALLENGED figure and that's what I would go for too though adding the caveats about the other two matches.
