Scottish League Grounds: Updated Record Crowds (6/11/05)
The guys at Soccer Books Limited have always done an excellent job, particularly concerning advance orders. Although I have not compared prices with e.g. Amazon, their service has been impeccable for more than 20 years. They were among the first to deliver football books abroad in the pre-internet-era , I think.
BTW: According to Rothmans Brechin's crowd vs Dundee apparently was 2,053 - I missed that one before.

Looking through "THE SUPPORTERS` GUIDE TO SCOTTISH FOOTBALL 2007" (a book token buy yesterday) & David`s "THE ROAR OF THE CROWD", I see the following deviations from his book & his above posting:
ABERDEEN: capacity given as 21,431
CELTIC: record attendance given as the old chestnut of 92,000
DUNFERMLINE: capacity given as 11,790
FALKIRK: capacity given as 6,122 (no record attendance given for current or former grounds)
HEARTS: record attendance given as 53,496
HIBS: capacity given as 17,400
KILMARNOCK: capacity given as 18,128
ST.MIRREN: record attendance given as 47,428 on 7/3/1925
AIRDRIE UTD: capacity given as 10,170 & no date given for the (correct) record attendance.
ALLOA: record attendance given as 3,000 on 26/2/1939
ARBROATH: capacity given as 4,153
BERWICK: record attendance given as 13,356 vs. Rangers in 1967.
BRECHIN: capacity given as 3,960 & record attendance as 8,244
CLYDE: capacity given as 8,200 & record attendance as 8,000
DUMBARTON: capacity given as 2,046 & record attendance as 2,035 on 27th January 2001. The Sons were winning 3-1 @ Cliftonhill that day.
DUNDEE: capacity given as 11,850
E.STIRLINGSHIRE: date for record attendance given as 21/2/1921 when it was 19/2/1921.
ELGIN: capacity given as 3,900
GRETNA: debatable capacity & record attendance figures
HAMILTON: capacity given as 6,034
LIVINGSTON: capacity & record attendance both given as 10,006. Attendance given as vs. Rangers with no date.
MORTON: date of record attendance given as 29/4/1921 when it was 22/4/1921
PARTICK: capacity given as 10,921
PETERHEAD: capacity given as 3,300 & record attendance as 2,300 with no date
QUEEN`S PARK: capacity given as 52,000 & record attendacne as 150,239
RAITH ROVERS: capacity given as 10,104
ROSS: capacity given as 6,500 & record attendance as 10,000 on (wrong date of) 19/2/1966
ST.JOHNSTONE: capacity given as 10,721 & record attendance as 10,545
STENHOUSEMUIR: capacity given as 2,654
STIRLING: I too have the date of the record attendance as 17/2/1996. David gives 19/2/1996
Some of these could be put down to typographical errors but most can be attributed to a lack of research or, in the case, of Hampden`s record attendance, a pure invention. Some record attendances relate to current grounds & others only to previous ones & only Montrose`s gives opponents; a strange patchwork of statistics altogether.

Don't know if it is of any consequence to you but whilst Queen of the South's licensed official capacity remains 6,412 it is extremely unlikely and almost impossible that the ground would ever hold that number in the near future.Matt wrote:Just before the year-end there's another update of the list:

Queen of the South – 6,412 / 6,158 v Morton (Div 2), 27 Apr 2002
Included within that total are a few hundred terracing places which due to reconstruction within the ground are now more or less inaccessable to the public. The Terregles Street End of the ground ahs no safety certificate (and is not included in that total) but the area of terrace between that end and the Main stand does have a safety certificate though it can only be accessed either over the disused Terregles Street End, down out of the Main Stand south exit or through the home dugout! It also has no toilet facilities.
It's mainly only ever used by club employees now though when Gretna visited at the start of this season an overspill of their fans had to be accommodated there and escorted around the bottom of the Terregles Street End by stewards. For this reason police required the second Gretna visit today to be all ticket in order to prevnet similar happening again. This is why today's attendance was way down on the previous one, or at least a fairly major part of the reason why.

BTW: What is the status re. the redevelopment of Palmerston? Will the 2 new stands as planned ever be built?
The redevelopment of Palmerston to bring seated capacity up to an acceptable level for SPL football was planned because in 2003/04 we suddenly found ourselves top of the first division for a spell and had to consider what we might do about it if we genuinely challenged for SPL football. Something that in fact we've not come remotely close to doing since.
The sad fact is we have no money whatsoever to put towards the project as things stand. It would cost in excess of £4m to put up both stands and the original plan was to make full use of European Grants and Lottery Funding in conjunction with local community projects to be housed under the stands in order to more or less make the thing 100% self funding. It didn't come off.
The planning permission lasts for 5 years and can be extended for a further 5 on payment of a small fee I believe but unless we have some enormous windfall income between now and then I doubt they'll ever be built.
I covered this in 'ROAR of the crowd.' Match reports made it clear there were considerably less than 3,000 at the game but that was the figure reported to the SFA so it stands as the official attendance even though everyone knows this not to be the case.hill o beath wrote:The Gretna v Dundee United game was sold out for the original date as Brooks Mileson gave all the tickets away without charge. However it was twice postponed, and when the game eventually went ahead in terrible conditions, there was considerably less than 3000 there.
I have tried to update the list:

Just to clarify as it's not clear from the above if you are aware of it or not but the "temporary" stand at Raydale Park is still there and in use. The reason that capacity has dropped again was they demolished an end of terracing in order to prepare to redevelop the ground.Matt wrote:I have tried to update the list:

On Saturdays you can get the 10.50 train from Prestwick Airport, change at Troon four minutes later then get the 11.30, arriving Gretna 1.17. Plenty of time for kick-off
If you're feeling adventurous then get the 11.20 from the airport. Then you only have six minutes in the purgatory of Troon station.
Of course next year no one will be going to Raydale - except for cup ties.
