No I hadn’t seen that thread, thanks for the heads up bluedragon.

Very good chance of me seeing my uncle over Christmas, so I’ll find out what if any information they have on that match. Not sure how well the records are kept at Saracen but there is a good possibility someone will recall the occasion.

If you do get the chance to see your Uncle I would be interested if the club had any details of a record-breaking Junior Cup tie at Saracen Park in 1953 when there was a record crowd for a Junior match played at a Junior ground. I have seen the Evening Times reports of the game but I am trying to ascertain if there is an accepted attendance figure - I have seen 26.513 widely quoted. At present England hold the record for the largest attendance for a non-league game at a non-league ground with 27,536 at Wigan Athletic's Springfield Park and so there is only 1,103 in it!

I have 25,613 but I also have a note of the Evening Times giving 23,496.

Like “Scottish” the figure I have seen quoted in several sources is 25,613 and in the centenary book for Ashfield published in 1986 the club historian, C McCulloch, quotes a rounded figure of 26,000. He also mentions a crowd of 20,000 attended the previous round match against Benburb. Given that in any case it is a record for a Junior cup tie, it is worth pursuing so I will find out more if I can.

Unfortunately, in the same book, Mr McCulloch makes no mention whatsoever of the 1973 match – Junior Select against Celtic/Rangers Select, the subject of the Louis Boyle testimonial in the original thread.
