Missed penalties for Scotland

Post by ScottishFA » Thu Jan 14, 2021 2:58 pm

While we bask in our perfect record in penalty shoot-outs recently, I was thinking of putting together an all-time list of national team penalty kicks (men's first team only).

Those scored are easy enough to find, but those missed can be hidden deep in reports. To save me a bit of time, has anyone done this already?

I think the first miss was Jacky Robertson v Ireland in 1901 (the 11-0 game) and the second miss was Jimmy Stark v England 1909. High profile misses that spring to mind are Don Masson v Peru in 1978, Gary McAllister at Wembley in 1996.

Others in recent memory are Charlie Mulgrew v Hungary 2018, Barry Bannan v Croatia 2013 (Steven Naismith scored the rebound), Darren Fletcher v Lithuania 2011, James McFadden v Iceland 2008 (Barry Robson scored the rebound), Mark Burchill v Lithuania 1999 (Don Hutchison scored the rebound).

Further back, Gary McAllister v Malta 1993, Tommy Hutchison v Spain 1974.

Any others?

Frank Gray missed from the spot against Belgium in Brussels in a Euro 84 qualifier. It was the night Dalglish scored two crackers.

Frank Haffey SAVED one taken by Bobby Charlton @ Hampden 1960 then threw the ball into the net when referee ordered retake because Eric Caldow had encroached. Charlton put the second try wide of Haffey`s right hand but also past the post.

I've now compiled a long list, mainly by searching through RSSSF - Scotland have been awarded 82 penalties, of which 63 scored and 19 missed/saved (although three of those still resulted in goals scored on the rebound).

As for penalties conceded by Scotland, I've found 50 scored but just four missed.

There must be others who have missed against Scotland, so any further recollections or suggestions are welcome in addition to these:
1901 Ernest Needham of England, saved by Harry Rennie
1960 Bobby Charlton of England, shot wide in a retake (having scored from a penalty earlier in the match)
2002 Luis Figo of Portugal, saved by Rab Douglas
2008 David Healy of Northern Ireland, saved by Allan McGregor

(And of course Zahavi and Mitrovic in the recent shoot-outs)

Bobby Murdoch & John Greig both hit the post in the same spot in the same game playing for the Scottish League against their English counterparts at Hampden in March 1969. In fact when I was watching it on TV I thought the film editors got something wrong and and showed the same penalty twice such was the similarity of the two misses. English League won 3--1.
