Does anyone know why St Mirren is spelt as it is when the Paisley saint was spelt Mirin? Someone has asked in work and it is really annoying me now!
Apologies if this has been asked before but I couldnt find it anywhere.
Thanks

Can't say for certain but I'd hazard a guess that it's just down to random variations on spelling, similar to Middlesbrough and Dunbartonshire. In both those instances you'll see 19th century references to Middlesborough and Dumbartonshire as well as the versions we are more familiar with today.
