Three penalties

Post by ScottishFA » Mon Aug 16, 2010 2:03 pm

After Paul Hartley's feat on Saturday, I was curious about the previous players to have scored a treble of penalties in Scotland. I've come up with the following list - any more suggestions?

Eddie Turnbull (Hibs 4 Celtic 1, 4 February 1950)
Bobby Collins (Celtic 3 Aberdeen 0, 26 September 1953)
Billy Price (Falkirk 3 Hamilton Accies 2, 8 August 1959 (LC))
Gordon Wallace (Montrose 4 Hamilton Accies 2, 20 April 1963)
Donald Ford (Morton 2, Hearts 3, 1 September 1973)
Bobby McKean (St Mirren 3 Brechin 0, 16 February 1974)
Gerry Colgan (Queen's Park 3 Brechin 1, 18 September 1976)

According to the Sun this morning, it's been done nine times in Scotland, don't have their list to hand unfortunately, but from memory they said the last time was an Albion Rovers player in 1996.

However, their list omitted Stevie Reilly scoring three from the spot for Queen's Park against Elgin City at Hampden on 16th August 2003 in a league match.

The Albion Rovers player was Dougie McGuire vs. Arbroath League Cup 1st Round 2rd August 1996. David Lindsay(St.Mirren) vs. Rangers Division One on 9th January 1904 was the first. It`s been done 13 times in senior football in league, Cup & League Cup.

Apologies - tried to find the list but doesn't seem to be on the Scottish Sun website.

Am I right in thinking that Donald Ford would be the last top-flight player to score a hat-trick of penalties in Scotland?

I've got gaps in my Rothmans yearbooks so cannot say definitively myself.

Another one to add to the list with Mark Roberts scoring three times from the spot for Ayr United against East Fife on Saturday.

An interesting day for him as it seems he proceeded to get involved in an altercation with an opposition player after the third and got sent off!

Safe to say that Mark Roberts is the first to score a penalty hat-trick AND get sent off.

Oddly enough, Mark Roberts made his debut, aged 15, as a substitute for Kilmarnock v Meadowbank in a Scottish Cup tie on Feb 4th 1991 and proceeded to miss from the spot in the penalty shoot-out. Tommy Burns also missed and Meadowbank won 4-3 to leave Killie with the dubious honour of being the first team to lose a Scottish Cup tie twice on penalties, having managed to become the first side to do so the previous year v Stranraer.

Who mentioned the good old days?

The Mark Roberts case is similar to the Damian Spencer story in some respects. He came on as sub for Cheltenham Town at home to MK Dons, 31 Jan 2009. His side trailed 5-0, then he scored a hat-trick and was then sent off. Cheltenham lost 5-3.

As I understand it, Forfar Athletic were awarded four separate penalties, 16 Oct 2010, in their 4-1 win at home to Ayr United. Ross Campbell scored (12 mins) and missed (75 mins), Scott Allan missed (76 mins) and sub Martyn Fotheringham (81 mins) scored. I know Burnley (1909) and Crystal Palace (1989) have both been awarded four separate (ie not including retaken) penalties in a League game in England. Is this the first such instance in the Scottish League?

Four penalty kicks have been awarded in a single game seven times in Scotland as far as I`m aware. The 1st instance I can find was St.Mirren vs. Rangers Division One 9/1/1904 - David Lindsay(St.Mirren) scored 3 and Bob Hamilton(Rangers) scored too. Lindsay was the 1st player to net a hat-trick of spot kicks.

Thank you, Leatherstocking. Do you or does anyone else have a list of the other five instances prior to last week's game?

Looking through the Herald and Scotsman archives today and I came across another example of this that I hadn't seen mentioned before, although it may be included in Leatherstocking's figure of fourteen occurances mentioned above.

It's Herd of Hamilton Accies scoring three penalties against Partick Thistle on 07/01/1933, Accies winning 4-3.

Four penalties given in the Rangers v St Mirren game from 7th April 2012 too obviously.

Sone Aluko and Lee McCulloch failed for Rangers. Kyle Lafferty scored. Paul McGown scored for St Mirren.

Don't forget the three clear penalties denied to Celtic in every match they lose.

The 1928 Queen`s vs. Killie game in Division One ended 5-3 not 5-1 for Queen`s. J.B.(Mutt) McAlpine scored with one penalty and netted with a rebound off the Killie `keeper with another. I don`t have the name(s) of Killie penalty taker(s) or of their `keeper I`m afraid. David?
