Four penalties were awarded in the Airdrieonians vs. Hibernian play-off match at Broadwood on Thursday, 22nd May 1997. The Diamonds had lost the first leg at Easter Road through a Steve Cooper own goal, but , following an early Paddy Connolly strike, he was presented with the chance to put Airdrie ahead in the return match, only to blast his spot kick over the bar. Darren Jackson went on to convert the two penalties that were awarded to the green-and-whites by Willie Young, while Kenny Black gave Airdrie a late consolation with the fourth penalty of the night.

Iain Russell scored three pens for Airdrie v Queen's Park today. I make this the 13th hat-trick of pens ever in the Scottish League.

2.2.2019 Rangers (1)4 St Mirren 0
3m James Tavernier scored pen
26m James Tavernier missed pen
55m James Tavernier scored pen
80m Jermaine Defoe scored pen

Tavernier passed up the opportunity to join the rare breed of players with a hat-trick of pens to their name, by letting Defoe take the fourth.

I make this only the second time (after Forfar, Oct 2010) that one side has been awarded four penalties in a Scottish League match. [Two occasions in England too - Burnley in 1909, Palace in 1989.]

Came across the Second Division match between Albion Rovers and Clydebank on the 17th of March 1928 and thought it worthy of mention in here.

Albion Rovers won 4-2, but Clydebank were awarded FOUR penalties, and according to the Glasgow Herald ALL of them were awarded for Rover's defender Cameron handling the ball! Sounds like a wee side bet or a trial for the Harlem Globetrotters!!!!!

Cheers

And of course we can now add David Goodwillie to the list of players that have scored three penalties in one match...

Going off at a slight tangent I am wondering if anyone has heard of any goalkeepers scoring a hat-trick of penalties.

In 1975 Kilbirnie Ladeside were missing penalties and gave ‘keeper Jim Marner a chance. They found he was rather good and gave him the job permanently. He scored 13 in a season including a hat-trick in a cup tie at local rivals Beith. José Luis Chilavert, the Paraguayan goalkeeper, achieved the feat in 1999 and it is widely reported that it was the first time in the history of football but 24 years after Jim’s deed for Ladeside albeit in Junior football.

I have been doing some digging and can only find four goalkeepers in British football who have scored hat tricks but in each case they had been deployed as emergency strikers and do not fit the bill. They are Jack Whitley (Everton reserves) 1903, Tony Read (Luton Town) 1965, Ken Simpkins (Boston United) 1968 and Jim Platt (Middlesbrough reserves) 1971.

Another one to add to the list of penalty hat-tricks: Finlay Speedie scored three for Dumbarton against Ayr United on 18 November 1911. It was a Scottish Qualifying Cup semi-final.

Somewhat unusually, Speedie wrote the match report in Monday's Scottish Referee, describing his own feat.
