Harry Haddock

Postby Shawfield Boy » Sun Sep 23, 2012 9:48 am

I'm researching Harry Haddock, and am struggling to get any more info on Harry getting the Scottish Footballer of the Year award in 1959 (mentioned on his wiki site).

Can anyone shed any light on this award, when it was, and who voted?

Also, Harry was noted for his long throw-ins, and I think I remember from somewhere that a newspaper organised a competition that Harry won.

Again, can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks as ever!

I have. Thanks very much for posting, there's always the chance that we miss info right on our doorsteps, if you know what I mean.

The POTY award most likely either a newspaper award. There was no 'official' POTY award (organised by Scottish football writers) until 1965 but individual sports writers and/or editors dished out awards on behalf of their papers and in the days before 'intellectual property' was a consideration these could be called Scottish Footballer of the Year without any complaints being received. I think the Sunday Mail was quite prolific in this respect in the 1950s.

Before the Scottish Football Writers Association awards got underway in 1965, the main player award was the one selected by Rex Kingsley of the Sunday Mail. A couple of the 'Rex Statuettes' have been sold at auction in the last few years.

Generally the award was made for a calendar year and presented either at the end of that year or early in the next one, with a big ceremony. For example, I have the programme for Dave Mackay winning the 1958 award at a ceremony held at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh on 15 Feb 1959. I don't have a full list of winners but perhaps someone can fill in the gaps:

1951 Gordon Smith (Hibs)
1952 Willie Thornton (Rangers)
1953 Bobby Evans (Celtic)
1954 Jimmy McGowan (Partick Th)
1955 George Young (Rangers)
1956 Willie McNaught (Raith Rovs)
1957 Alex Parker (Falkirk)
1958 Dave Mackay (Hearts)
1959 Harry Haddock (Clyde)
1960
1961
1962 Ian Ure (Dundee)
1963
1964 Charlie Aitken (Motherwell)

Harry's award ceremony was at St Andrew's Halls, Charing Cross, Glasgow on Valentines night 1960 - I even managed to get a copy of the programme.

Anyway, another couple of Harry Haddock questions - Can anyone tell me if he played in Clyde's friendlies against Sunderland (18 Match 1953) or against Nottingham Forest (15 April 1953). Both were in England.

Thanks

I'll now answer my own query!

Managed to get into the Mitchell Library for an hour tonight, and now know that Harry played in both the games mentioned.

Cheers
