When I see 1960s internationalists, in the form of Ian McMillan, start to appear on the list it is a sign that tempus is indeed fugiting. And far too fast for my liking!bluedragon wrote:Thanks Snuff. From a personal view it is noticeable that I am starting to see a couple of names who I can vaguely remember in the autumn of their playing careers but more vividly as managers.

Re: Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists
That is sad news. "Long John" Hewie was a long-serving Charlton Athletic player who was "Mr Versatility" as he played in every position for the club apart from the wing. During his Scotland career he was nominated as penalty taker as well as stand-in goalkeeper!football2011 wrote:John Hewie has died today aged 87.

Love this interview he did in 2006:

Seems like his final years were a trial, though, suffering from dementia in a Lincolnshire nursing home.

Re: Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists
The newspaper article seems to suggest he first visited Scotland for his first full International(vs. England @ Hampden in 1956) but his first trip to the land of his parents was actually to play for the B team also vs. England @ Easter Road in 1953.

With the sad passing on Friday of Jimmy Murray of Hearts - the first Scotland player to score in the World Cup Finals, when he bagged our equaliser against Yugoslavia, in Vasteras - there is a new guy in our Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists First XI.

Re: Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists
With the sad passing of Sammy Cox, I have once again been forced to make a change to our "First XI" of the oldest-surviving Scottish internationalists.
This change has a kind of symmetry to it, one Ayrshire-born former Rangers full-back coming in for another. The new "Cap" is Eric Caldow. Sadly, Eric, like Sammy, has been afflicted by Alzheimer's and I understand, from a chat with a member of the Caldow family last week, he is not doing well.
The revised line-up is:
Bobby Brown (Rangers) - three caps – 1946/47 : 1951-52: d.o.b. 19/03/1923

Eric Caldow (Rangers) - 40 caps - 1957-1963: d.o.b. 14/05/1934

Re: Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists
Thanks Snuff. I am sorry to hear about Eric Caldow’s health. I have a vivid recollection of seeing the newsreel or perhaps TV coverage of him being stretchered up the steps of an aircraft at Heathrow a couple of days after breaking his leg at Wembley in 1963. I think the seriousness of his injury made an impact on me. Off at a tangent but Eric Caldow had a short spell as manager of non-league Corby Town in England commonly referred to as “Little Scotland”! Eric managed to entice a Rangers Reserve team to travel to play a pre-season friendly in August 1968. The Rangers team were apparently escorted to the ground through the streets led by the local pipe band. Eric had some Scots in his team including Bertie Black ex Killie and Harry Fallon ex St Johnstone. The Rangers team included Roger Hynd, Bobby Watson and Alfie Conn and other players better known at other clubs - Murray McDermott and Brian Heron. Corby Town won 2:1. I think the connection is still strong and Rangers hanselled Corby’s new ground a few years ago.
Re: Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists
I just see that Greame Leggat has died , he was a month younger than Eric Caldow.
Re: Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists
That should have been Graham , not Greame .
Re: Oldest Surviving Scottish Internationalists
As with the newspaper article in the Daily Ranger on Saturday, most folk use the wrong spelling for the "Firhill Flyer".
It is Johnny MACKENZIE, not Mc.

I refer you to the Evening Citizen Autograph Club, 1955, in an era when you could actually read player signatures. He signed his photo J MacKenzie.
