More dates of birth and death

Postby Bristol Rovers » Sat May 18, 2013 8:43 am

Just hoping someone might have a few rogue dates of birth and death (or more accurate ones), or perhaps access to scotlandspeople or similar sites. I would be very grateful for dates of any of these, who all played Southern League football for Bristol Rovers, 1899-1920. Sorry to add such a long list, but I would be delighted with any information, regardless of source. Many thanks in advance.

Just for a wee Saturday morning exercise, I've had a look at one of the more unusual names, Thomas Vail, and have come up with this:

Born 1873 in Auchterderran, Fife (it's the next village to Lochgelly) to Michael Vail and Ann Naysmith
Living in 1881 in Lochgelly with parents
Living in 1891 in Auchterderran with parents
Married 26 Oct 1898 to Betsy Watson in Auchterderran
Living in 1901 in Doncaster, Railway Labourer (I see he played for Doncaster at one stage, so that fits)
Died 3 July 1940 in Buckhaven, Fife (from a family tree on ancestry)
Full name Thomas Naismith Vail (middle name also spelled as Naysmith and Nasmyth depending on which family tree you look at!)

Another quick one:
James Henderson Dargue died in 1937 in Scotland.

According to ENFA database:

John Chalmers born Beith 16.11.1886
John Leonard b. Gloucester 1876

From my own notes I have James Dargue as d.Townhead 03.05.1937, but I have not been able to trace the source of this date.

Many thanks. I have also seen this place and date for James Dargue elsewhere - where is Townshead?

Freebmd (incomplete, I know) doesn't give any John Leonard born at that time in Gloucester, though one was born in Bristol in 1877. However, back in the 1980s, the Derby County book published by Breedon said he joined County from St Mirren. Why would a Glos boy end up at Love Street? - I am still unconvinced whether he is a Gloucestershire lad or born north of the border ....

Townhead is, ahem, a douce central Glasgow 'arondissement': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Townhead

It is also the home of the Royal Infirmary, where Mr Dargue died.

... and another question. Sorry about all of these. Bill Culley (Killie, Cup Final 1920 and all that) was the second of five sons of James and Mary Culley of Kilwinning. Given his middle name, was there a James Culley who married as Mary Neill in Kilwinning in approx 1888? Does anyone have access to a website that might give this information? Thanks.

He was always known as Willie, not Bill. Or, more accurately, the rhythmically perfect Wullie Culley.

Just a bit of coat-tailing on Bristol Rovers' post at the head of this topic; but a remarkable coincidence, I hope you think...

I, too, am seeking death/emigration/post-career details for an Archibald Morris Hughes, also Neilston-born, but 15 years earlier, and also a former Arthurlie player. Spooky, eh?

The Leicester Fosse man was b. Neilston, Renfrewshire, 18th May 1870 (son of a bleacher, he later worked as such himself)

Playing Career: Barrhead; Arthurlie; cs 1892 Middlesbrough Ironopolis; cs 1893 Bolton Wanderers; Aug 1894 FOSSE; cs 1895 Glossop North End; cs 1896 Chatham.

Main claim to fame, I grudgingly suppose, was as an FA Cup finalist with Bolton in 1894.

Any assistance with further info much appreciated: I seem to have expended far too many Scotland's People credits on this guy already...

I mentioned David Harvie on this thread earlier. I am now more confident that he was born in 1887 (as opposed to any other year) in Saltcoats. Anyone know?

I never met Archie although I am his great Nephew. He died in Barrhead aged 87 in 1972.
