Stewart McLean

Post by soccerhistory » Wed Jun 05, 2013 7:04 am

Stewart McLean was on the books of Dumbarton in 1949-50 and a regular first team player but I cannot trace his stats in the usual scources. Can anyone help out with a breakdown of his appearances and goals by competition (SL, SC, SLC) please. Also is there any definite evidence this is the same player who later turned out for Forfar (1950-1952) and Stenhousemuir (1952-1955)? Forfar Dispatch merely describes him as an experienced player, although there's no other experienced player of this name who matches the description.

I think there might be a bit of confusion here. According to John Litster's disks the Dumbarton player in 49/50 was Neil McLean, who had three seasons with the club before being released in 1950. Also, in the 50/51 Sunday Chronicle annual, he is given as N McLean.

He may have signed for Forfar, as they had two McLeans in 50/51. According to the Evening Citizen handbook for 51/52, in 50/51 one of the McLeans played 28 matches, the other played 3 - but they don't give initials.

According to the excellent fitbastats.com website Stewart McLean joined Forfar Athletic from Dumbarton. His appearances and goals for Forfar below:

1950/51 23 league (2 goals), 1 scottish cup, 6 league cup
1951/52 28 league, 1 scottish cup, 7 league cup

Bobby Sinnett and Thomas Jamieson have created a great resource at fitbastats.com

Many thanks for the responses. I had done some work in local papers which show the Partick/East Fife man was with Dumbarton but couldn't link him to the Forfar/Stenhousemuir player and the 2 versions of Litster's disk differ on this. Stewart McLean was clearly a regular for Dumbarton in the first half of 49/50 as indicated in the Lennox Herald from that period. I haven't looked up Neil McLean but there was only one player of this surname at the club, as there are also reserve line-ups which confirm this. Unfortunately the Forfar Dispatch only referred to him as experienced which didn't confirm any connections.

When Stewart passed away on the 11th Sept 2011 his daughter Alison contacted the clubs giving an outline of his life. Stewart signed for Partick Thistle in 1941 before joining the Navy, later became an Bevan Boy in Yorkshire and joined Rotherham United in 1946 scoring 18 goals in his first season. Return up the road to Glasgow to bring up his family and continued his football career, he skippered Dumbarton, Forfar Athletic and Stenhousemuir, before retiring.
