Lochgelly Utd v Inverness Clachnacuddin 24/01/1920
In order to complete my Scottish Cup stats for season 1919/20, I am looking for the line-up's of both teams from the above mentioned Scottish Cup First Round match. I have checked the Scotsman, Sunday Post and Glasgow Herald, but no luck there. Also need the referee and attendance if available.

Hi Alan
I can't help out with the actual match details you require but I can maybe help by saying where they might be found. A couple of months ago I went to the Jenny Lee Centre in Lochgelly which houses the local library as part of my ongoing research into Leith Athletic. They have copies of the local newspaper from the time you are looking at on microfilm: "Cowdenbeath & Lochgelly Times & Advertiser" - published weekly (Wednesday). There was always a match report from the previous weekend's Lochgelly United game & most weeks, but not always, it included both team's line-ups. The crowd & referee was only given if mentioned in the text.
With it being a Cup Tie I'm sure it will have been reported on in some detail in said local newspaper. Might even be worth giving the library a ring to see if one of the very helpful ladies who were brilliant on my visit could maybe check out the relevant week for you to save you a journey?
Hope that helps a wee bit. Happy hunting!

Thanks for the advice Jim. Next time I am in the Mitchell Library I will check out the Daily Record and Sunday Mail and if they don't have what I am after then I will certainly get in contact with the Lochgelly library as you mentioned. How's the Leith Athletic research coming along, are you planning to publish a book? Thanks again.

Research coming along nicely. Just a few loose ends to tie up/verify then I do indeed hope to publish a book. As to how many people will be interested in a club that played its last game in 1954 I'm not sure but its a story that deserves to be recorded/told.

Interesting enough for me. Stick my name down for a copy of your book when it is published.

Re: Lochgelly Utd v Inverness Clachnacuddin 24/01/1920
Make it three.
I have 2,000 for the Lochgelly game and figures of 5,000 for the first replay in the second round tie between Raith Rovers and East Stirling on 11/2/20, and 6,000 for the third round replay between Ayr United and Armadale on 25/2/1920, both of which are missing from John Byrne's "Scottish Cup 1873-1986." John Litster's "Always Next Year" has 12,000 for the Raith game.
If your figures are estimates I have a few exact ones. 21/2/20 R3 Kilmarnock v Queen's Park 15,208. 6/3/20 QF Rangers v Celtic 98,466. 17/4/20 Final Kilmarnock v Albion Rovers 95,811.

Thanks for the additional attendance data. The Rangers v Celtic crowd was a new Scottish club record at the time, the Sunday Post has a good image of the stadium from 07/03/20.

Re: Lochgelly Utd v Inverness Clachnacuddin 24/01/1920
Unfortunately not much luck from the newspaper in Lochgelly library. No mention of referee or attendance and the only Inverness player mentioned was goalkeeper McLeary. No team lineup for Lochgelly but there does seem to be 10 players mentioned in match report. McLean (gk) Paterson (capt) J Penman, Gourlay Russell Moffat Archibald Uran Herd Nicol. Report mentions that players T Penman and Clark were absent and that goalkeeper McLean had signed from Lochgelly Feds because their normal goalkeeper was injured. Annoying part of this was that both the games v royal Albert and Third Lanark had team lineups and referees in the match reports.
Couple of lineups for Lochgelly near the game.
10th Jan Kennedy Paterson Archibald Nicol Herd Cannon T Penman Uren Moffat Russell J Penman
7th Feb McLean Paterson Archibald Nicol Herd Cannon Gourlay McKinnon Russell Uren Clark
Also visited Dunfermine Library local history department and checked the following papers with no success.
Dunfermline Press, Dunfermline Express, Dunfermline Journal and West Fife Echo

Re: Lochgelly Utd v Inverness Clachnacuddin 24/01/1920
Many thanks for taking the trouble to check these newspapers. The SFA archives at Hampden will definitely have the line-ups, so if I don't have any luck at the Mitchell then that will be my last port of call. Again many thanks for your help on this one.
