Playing Each Other 4 Times Running

Post by HibeeJibee » Mon Mar 09, 2015 12:42 am

Dundee Utd & Celtic meet for 4 competitive games in a row between March 8th & 21st 2015.

Has this happened before?

Well, there was Rangers v Hibs in 1979:

12 May Scottish Cup Final
16 May Scottish Cup Final replay
28 May Scottish Cup Final second replay
31 May Scottish League (Ibrox)

And would you believe, first game of the new season
11 August Scottish League (Easter Road)

These were five consecutive competitive games for Hibs, but Rangers squeezed in a couple of league games (21 May v Celtic and 23 May v Partick Thistle)

I would imagine it happened fairly frequently in the pre-WW1 Scottish Qualifying Cup, which was given precedence over other competitions.

In 1910/11 Dunfermline met Kirkcaldy United in four successive QC ties between 17 September and 5 October.

Dunfermline also played Raith Rovers four times in a row in 1917/18 - 30 March (Eastern League), 6 April (Fife Cup Final), 13 April (Wemyss Cup) & 20 April (Fife Cup Final replay).

Beith and Broxburn Athletic met five times in 1908-09 Scottish Cup. Jan 23rd, Jan 30th, feb 3rd, Feb 4th, Feb 5th. Hard to see either of them fitting in a game between any of those dates.

Beith then played St Mirren in next round on Feb 6th.

Been asked over on P&B as well. Queen's Park and Clyde met four times in a row in 1909/10:

19/02/10 - Scottish Cup 3rd Round (Hampden) 2-2
26/02/10 - Replay (Shawfield) 2-2
02/03/10 - 2nd Replay (Celtic Park) 2-1 to Clyde
05/03/10 - SFL Division One (Hampden) 2-2

I think there has been one instance of 6 successive meetings.

Scottish Qualifying Cup 1901-02 Round 2

21 Sep Albion Rovers 0 Wishaw United 0 (match protested)
28 Sep Albion Rovers 1 Wishaw United 1
5 Oct Wishaw United 2 Albion Rovers 2
12 Oct Albion Rovers 2 Wishaw United 2 (at Broomfield)
19 Oct Albion Rovers 1 Wishaw United 1 (at Motherwell)
26 Oct Wishaw United 2 Albion Rovers 1 (at Hamilton)

Clyde and Partick Thistle very nearly met in four consecutive games in the eighties

19 Feb 83 PTFC 2 Clyde 2 (Firhill, Scottish Cup 4th Round)
23 Feb 83 Clyde 1 PTFC 1 (Shawfield, Scottish Cup 4th Round Replay) - match abandoned due to floodlight failure
26 Feb 83 Clyde 1 PTFC 2 (Shawfield, League match)
28 Feb 83 Clyde 0 PTFC 6 (Shawfield, Scottish Cup 4th Round Replay)
