Penalty kicks were introduced in 1891 but were direct free kicks allowed as part of the original rules or were they introduced at a later stage like penalties?

Free kicks to punish fouls were first introduced in 1877, but a goal could not be scored directly from one. (The concept of free kicks had its origins in Sheffield rules).

The laws were changed in 1903 to make it possible to score direct from a free kick awarded for a foul or for intentionally handling. Until then, all free kicks apart from penalties were indirect.
