Celtic played a Borders Select on Wednesday, 18 April 1906 at Mossilee, Galashiels. I believe the score was 4-0 to Celtic.

A newspaper report on the day of the game gave Celtic's team as Adams, Watson, McLeod, Young, McNair, Hay, Bennett, McMenemy, Quinn, Somers, Bauchop.

However, a later report said that Celtic were "practically at full strength except for McLeod and Somers", so that team can't be correct. It looks like McMenemy, Young & Quinn in the photo but I don't know about the others.

Amongst the Borders players were goalkeeper MacPherson (Peebles), backs Kyle (Gala Renton) and D. Nichol (Gala Hailes Villa), outside-right Pearson (Gala Renton) and Blaikie (Duns).

There had been a trail match at Mossilee on Wednesday, 4 April with a view to selecting a team to play Heart of Midlothian, Celtic and Rangers later in the month, according to the Southern Reporter the following day.
It gives the teams and the clubs they represented. If you haven't got access to the BNA I'll be happy to type it out for you.

After posting earlier today I had a lingering feeling that I'd actually heard of this match before. So it proved. It is actually mentioned at the start of "From Mossilee to the San Siro - the History of Gala Rovers". To raise funds for a pavilion in Galashiels Public Park the Border FA played Celtic, Rangers and Hearts over consecutive Wednesday evenings losing 4-2, 6-1 and 3-1. Crowds were 2,000 (paid £47), 2,000 (paid unknown) and unknown (paid £38) going by the book and the local paper. Subsequent games:

Now, there was a sad loss to the Scottish football history community. I never met him but had many long e-mail "discussions" and it was always a pleasure to hear from him.

Unfortunately, I never met him either although I did speak with him on the phone.

He was always very helpful and after he passed away I was fortunate to be given a copy of his Celtic files by another Celtic Historian, Tom Campbell. These files have been very useful for adding to my data on Celtic Minor & Friendly matches
