Substitute Numbers

Post by barrymaclean » Tue Feb 02, 2016 6:28 pm

When two substitutes were allowed in domestic matches for the first time in 1973-74 did the substitutes wear numbers 12 and 13 OR 12 and 14.

Perhaps it may have been up to the Clubs what numbers they used?

Few of the match programmes of that era give substitute numbers instead leaving a space against the heading substitutes but note that Clyde and Motherwell state Nos 12 and 14 in their publication.

We must have been a superstitious lot in those days, as I can't recall anyone using 13 when the second sub was introduced. It was always 12 and 14. However, I don't think there was any rule about it, just a matter of choice.

Like Andy I cannot remember seeing 13 being used. There is a thread on shirt numbers that gives some of the history. It was, until fairly recently and as you both suggest, a matter of choice on the use of shirt numbers and not just foe substitutes.
