OSWALD

Post by LEATHERSTOCKING » Thu Apr 20, 2017 1:48 pm

3rd LRV had two brothers J.Oswald in the 80s & 90s one James & the other John. Sometimes to differentiate they were referred to as Oswald snr. & Oswald jnr. All very well if I knew their dates of birth but I only know James`s - 3rd January 1868. Does anyone know John`s?

Hi,

According to the 1881 census, brothers James (13; messenger boy) and John (11; school) – both born Greenock – were living in the family home in Govan with parents Joseph & Mary. Which, by my reckoning, makes John the Junior...

Afraid I'm now out of Scotland's People credits, but it should be easy enough to track down an exact birth reg with the above bare bones.

Thank you Leicester, that`s all I need. I don`t know why the press was so ambiguous in naming Oswald names. The Buchanans who played for Cambuslang around the same time were always published as James and John rather than resorting to "snr" or "jnr". Meanwhile the Queen`s Park lovong 19thC press spared no effort in differentiating between the various Davidsons, Lambies, Stewarts etc.(& quite right too).

The brothers were James Oswald ('Tinny') 1868-1948 and John McGill Oswald 1869-1953. Not sure why James was called Tinny, as his brother John was a tinsmith.

There is another QP link as James's son played one match for Queen's Park v Hearts in January 1924 (as mentioned in the Sunday Post).

James Oswald made a guest appearance for 3rd LRV in a Merchants Charity Cup game in May 1893 while with Notts County when, without his brother, John, playing thus with no waters to muddy the press belatedly published his full name. Oh, thanks!
