Scottish Cup

Post by BMCCOLL » Sun Oct 29, 2017 7:19 pm

The 1876-77 first round tie between St Andrew's and Ayr Eglinton, recorded in most, if not all sources as a walkover, was actually played in Ayr on 7 Oct 1876. Eglinton wanted to use the Racecourse but Cup rules prohibited public grounds being used so after a delay an agreement with Ayr Thistle saw their ground being used. Two halves of 30 mins was played and Saints won 1-0. [Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald]

In the 1880-81 first round, the Athole v Whitefield tie [25 Sep] has been recorded as being awarded to Athole after a protest. I've found that this was actually the THIRD game, ending 2-1 for Athole after extra time, meaning there were two previous matches [on 11 and 18 Sep], presumably one of those was where the protest came from. Given the original draw had Athole at home and the third match was at Whitefield I'd bank on the replay being where the protest resulted.
In short is there a note of these scores?

Secondly Helensburgh met Lennox twice. The first match [2-1 on 11 Sep] was protested but Helensburgh romped home 8-0 in the replay on 25 Sep.

1879-80 competition
The first round tie between Netherlee v Morton [20 Sep] actually ended 2-2, not 0-0

As well as Bellshill, Barrhead Rangers, Dennistoun, Cartside, Plains Bluebell, Stewarton and Strathmore (Dundee) all joined the Scottish FA after the first round was played and were al-lowed to play in the second round.

And intriguingly I'm sure I came across one single reference stating Burnside had beaten Ailsa 2-1 in their 1st rd tie [20 or 27 Sep?]. After Burnside subsequently disbanded, were Ailsa actually re-instated and placed in the 2nd round ballot?

Whitefield and Athole played out a 1-1 draw on the 11th September.

To quote an extract from my book:

11th September 1880
First Round Whitefield 1-1 Athole
S.F.A.C.M. [21st Sep]. Owing to an irregularity in the appointment of a referee the match was declared null and void.

The September 25th match was played at Ibrox Park and resulted in a 2-1 win for Athole after extra time. (1-1 after 90 minutes)
