Sheriff of London Charity Shield

Post by Alan Brown » Thu Nov 09, 2017 12:41 pm

I came across this snippet earlier while researching the year 1899. http://londonhearts.com/scores/images/1 ... 111302.htm

"Queen's Park, who drew with Aston Villa last season, wish it to remain in Glasgow for another month. after then it will be handed over to the Corinthians, who won it last Wednesday at the Crystal Palace."

I have assumed that as Queen's Park drew with Aston Villa that the trophy was kept for 6 months each. They must have been very generous in those days, as they seem to have allowed Queen's Park to hold on to the trophy even after Corinthians had won it. Not sure if there would have been the same outcome had it been one of the 'big two' Glasgow clubs involved!

I remember coming across a reference to this trophy some time ago. It was a huge shield perhaps 4 or 5 feet high. I think the donor was a member of the Dewars whisky family who was Sheriff of London at the time.

It was the size of a wardrobe door. Here it is pictured in Arsenal hands along with many other trophies: there is - by any other measure - a pretty formidable shield off to the left too, and presumably the FA's Charity Shield directly to the right of the Sherriff of London's.

Only actually contested for 10yrs:
