Admira Wien tour of Scotland 1954

Postby EastJunior » Thu Dec 07, 2017 10:17 pm

Trying to fill in the gaps of games played, results etc. Have managed to track down a few but some remain elusive, not helped by the fixtures appearing to change at late notice. These are the games I have confirmed;

07/04/54 Kilmarnock L0-5 14,000
12/04/54 Hearts W2-0 10,000
15/04/54 Aberdeen Reserves W2-1
19/04/54 Rothes/Elgin XI @ Elgin L2-3
22/04/54 Inverness Select L1-2

However, matches against Stirling Albion and St.Johnstone were also scheduled, were they played? were any other matches played?

Any help appreciated.

21/04/54 St Johnstone W 2-1 4,600

A proposed match against a combine Forfarshire XI (Brechin, Forfar, Montrose and Arbroath) was scuppered because Admira wanted a £500 guarantee.

Thanks Brian, was that a 2-1 win for Admira?

Admira won 2-1.
They were originally meant to play Aberdeen on 10 April, but the Dons had a cup-tie that day. A new date was arranged (15 Apr). Admira were scheduled to play Forres/Elgin after the Stirling game but appears the latter match was put off in favour of the Aberdeen match.

This is the latest I have Brian, the Stirling match definitely took place as I'm told a programme exists for it;

07/04/54 Kilmarnock L0-5 12,540
12/04/54 Hearts W2-0 10,000
15/04/54 Aberdeen Reserves W2-1
17/04/54 Rothes/Elgin XI @ Elgin L2-3
19/04/54? Stirling Albion ?
21/04/54 St.Johnstone W2-1 4,600
22/04/54 Inverness Select L1-2

Not entirely sure if all dates are accurate, other whether there was an 8th fixture, I believe they may also have played a few games in Ireland.

According to Stirling Albion history, they played Admira at Annfield on 21 April and won 5-1.

However, that seems to be wrong. I've just found the match report in the Evening Times of Saturday 17 April: http://www.londonhearts.com/scores/images/1954/1954041710.htm

That, of course, means the Rothes/Elgin game was on a different date, and it was scheduled for Monday 19 April.

I was interested to see an Elgin/Rothes team played Admira. While the clubs are only 10 miles apart, Elgin were traditionally a much stronger Highland League team than Rothes so why did they combine? I tried to find more but only found the Dundee Courier of 16 April 1954 reporting that the match scheduled for Monday 19 April 1954 at Elgin was to be against a North of Scotland Select and was to include two St Johnstone players (Ian Rodger and Archie Baird). If you know any more about the match at Elgin I would be interested to hear.

That's not the only game played by an Elgin / Rothes select. They put out a combined team in friendlies on a number of occasions - the aim being to attract a better crowd from the Elgin and Speyside areas.

Thanks for the explanation of the Elgin/Rothes select, Prorege. I found that when Rothes finally applied and were admitted to the Highland League in 1938 they hoped that that they would draw an attendance from Elgin when Elgin City were playing away and the other Speyside towns to help to balance the books with the additional travel costs in the Highland League. After their HL application was accepted Rothes had to make ground improvements but when Elgin City were playing away they put Borough Briggs at the new club’s disposal in the event of the ground not being ready. I will need to look further at this informal relationship between the two clubs.

Thank you for posting the details of the two tour matches in the North of Scotland.

In an article published by the Northern Scot in 2011 on Elgin City's 90 years occupancy of Borough Briggs it said that there was a crowd "of over 5,000 fans" at the match on 19 April 1954.
