I had Ronnie Tracey (Petershill, EK Thistle, Clyde, Albion Rovers and Stranraer) as a guest over at Broadwood recently, and he was telling he had won the Scottish Amateur Cup with Crosshouse Waverley, and the Junior Cup with EK Thistle. It got us wondering if anyone had achieved the treble ie Amateur, Junior and senior Scottish Cup medals?

Ronnie Tracey
1978/79 Scottish Amateur Cup winners Crosshouse Waverley
1982/83 Scottish Junior Cup winners East Kilbride Thistle

That is a very interesting question that occurred to us when we were researching Junior internationalists and trying to find a player capped at all three levels (amateur, junior and full). Instinctively I think there cannot be many treble cup winners if any and even double cup winners like Ronnie must be rare.

The nearest we came to a treble of international caps was centre forward Alec Stewart (Perth YMCA, Queen’s Park, St Mirren, Sheffield United, St Johnstone, Motherwell, Falkirk & Dumbarton) He was a Junior cap at Perth YMCA (1927) and added an Amateur cap at St Mirren (1929) before coming close to a Full cap at Motherwell (1937). The newspapers say he was being considered by the Scottish selectors in the 1936/37 season but the nearest he got was selection for the Scottish League to play the Football League at the start of the following season on 22 September 1937.

With help from many, many others we think DOUGIE ARNOTT maybe the player who got the nearest to achieving the treble of Amateur, Junior and Senior Scottish Cup winners’ medals in that he played in finals of all three competitions and was a winner in one.

1984/85 Scottish Amateur Cup finalists Motherwell Miners Welfare lost to Drongan 1:2
1985/86 Scottish Junior Cup finalists Pollok lost to Auchinleck Talbot 2:3
1990/91 Scottish Cup winners Motherwell beat Dundee United 4:3

TOM BROWN was a winner in two of the three competitions:

1992/93 Scottish Junior Cup winners Glenafton Athletic
1996/97 Scottish Cup winners Kilmarnock

Scottish International PADDY BUCKLEY came close to Tom’s achievement:

1947/48 Scottish Junior Cup winners Bo’ness United
1952/53 & 1953/54 Scottish Cup finalists Aberdeen

A very good contender for the biggest winners’ medal haul (5) is JIMMY MCMILLAN:

1985/86, 1986/87 & 1987/88 Scottish Junior Cup winners Auchinleck Talbot
1991/92 & 1994/95 Scottish Amateur Cup winners Heathside
