GROUND TITLES

Post by LEATHERSTOCKING » Fri Sep 11, 2020 3:05 pm

The International attendances thread set me thinking about ground titles and I wonder if there was an official change over from Shawfield Park to stadium & Firhill Park to stadium. I think Ibrox Park changed in 1938 when the Empire Exhibition was on. After 117 years this will be Queen`s Park`s last season @ Hampden Park; from 2021-22, they`ll be playing @ New Lesser Hampden(NLH). Apart from the SFA, does ANYONE call it THE NATIONAL STADIUM?

I am not sure about official name changes but perhaps “stadium” could have started to be used when both grounds started greyhound racing. I seem to remember reading that Ibrox Park became Ibrox Stadium because it hosted the opening ceremony and other events at the Empire Exhibition and “stadium” was thought to be a more fitting suffix.

Today’s National Stadium was often referred to as Greater Hampden Park to distinguish it from its smaller neighbour.

Would Clyde and Partick Thistle programmes give a clue to the title change?

On the subject of ground titles. When Dumbarton built their new stadium . AFAIK it was called Strathclyde Homes Stadium right from the word go and has changed since by other sponsors did it have officially a non sponsor title , As I'm cataloguing my programme collection I dont like using sponsor names for stadiums.

Aberdeen started using the word Stadium on their programmes in 69/70 season replacing Pittodrie Park
