While extending a line across the 18 yard box right across the pitch so you could only be offside if in that areawas certainly used in the Dryburgh Cup in the 1970's, was it ever used in any "full" domestic competitions such as the League Cup?

I'm sure there was an experimental game played in the 1960s between two Scottish clubs without any off-side rule at all. I think it ended something like 10-9.

I THINK the League Cup in either 1972 or 1973 or both were played under the 18 yard offside rule.

Much as I've tried to forget that game I can't.And it's even worse as there were apparently only three players in the Hearts team according to that link!

The 18-yard across the pitch no offside zone applied only in the second half. In the first 45 minutes there was no offside at all. The background to this match was that it was an official FIFA experiment undertaken by the SFA. Hearts had just come back from a European tour. Killie hadn't played for a month. Substitution (for injury) was also permitted which was also a novelty at that time.

Hearts: Cruickshank, Ferguson, Holt, Barry, Anderson, Cumming, O'Donnell, Wallace, Ford, Traynor, Hamilton

Killie: Ferguson, King, Dickson, Murray, Beattie, McFadzean, McLean, McInally (Malone), Black, Sneddon, McIlroy

Ref: Hugh Phillips (Wishaw)

Goals: Hearts: Ford 5 (30, 34, 65, 69, 75) Ferguson 2 (72,78), O'Donnell (83) Killie: Sneddon (84), McIlroy (86)

IIRC a few of the Hearts goals were "offside"

Incidentally this was Willie Waddell's last game as Kilmarnock manager.

I too recall something about the League Cup - possibly 72-73 when the qualifying section format was changed to make two 1st and two 2nd division teams in each section.

There was a no offside experiment in Jim Fallon’s testimonial in 1983 when Clydebank played Celtic.

Celtic won 5-3. My recollection is that Bobby Williamson spent most of his time standing in the Celtic penalty box chatting to Peter Latchford.

I’m pretty sure it was a FIFA sanctioned experiment. I have the programme (actually just a sheet of glossy paper) at home, that might give a tiny bit more information.
