Scottish Football League 1890-1900

Post by bobby s » Sat Jan 17, 2009 6:02 pm

I noticed at the end of Byrne Scottish Cup book that there were plans to publish the above book in 1987 by the Association of Football Statisticians.

So I wonder, If it was ever published and if it was who was the author and what did it contain?

Thanks
B

AFAIK this never saw the light of day. The period is covered in the IFFHS publication "Fußball Weltzeitschrift" No 19, Jan-Mar 1992 by Dr Alfredo Poge & Robert McCutcheon. The text is in German but the stats are pretty clear. They include league tables, club-by-club appearance totals, highest scores, top goalscorers, best keepers, win, lose & draw sequences, home and away tables and score charts (without dates) for the 1st Division.

For the 2nd division it gives just the final table, high scores, total goals and ever-presents.

There are also a few photos.

The same issue also has a five-page history of Scottish football before 1900 by Robert McCutcheon. With photos but in German. There's a ten-page article on the Home Internationals 1884-1900, again with pics and in German. And a history of the Queen's Park-Corinthians games between 1886-1900 by Forrest Robertson & Maurice Golesworthy, eloquently written, I'm sure, in German with full match details, including attendances which, for some of the Hampden games, are full figures, not estimates.

The same information as the Poge/McCutcheon piece but for 1900-1910 appears in another IFFHS publication, 'Libero' No 34, 3rd quarter of 2001. This is by Alan Brown and everything is bi-lingual, including the annual reviews.

I have a few copies of the Libero magazine covering the period 1900-1910. If you want a copy let me know.
