The British Library has now opened up access to a range of newspaper archives, although unfortunately very little is on free access. The relevant link is:

Again, this is one of those things where membership of an academic institution comes in handy as it allows free access not just to the 19th century papers but a full collection of newspapers and official documents from 1600. 'Academic institution' is loosely defined and evening flower-arranging might well give access to the lot. There is also reference to access via public libraries in some instances.

As far as 19th century Scottish papers go these are the same as previously available through ATHENS - i.e. Glasgow Herald (most of whose football content is accessible via London Hearts), Caledonian Mercury (ends in 1867, very limited) and the Aberdeen Journal.

Some of the English papers do mention Scottish football - the Times in the pre-league era isn;t too bad - but in a perfunctory way. Reynold's News for instance gives 1st division results and venues - information which is readily available elsewhere.
