Ending of amateur status in England 1974

Post by bluedragon » Wed Mar 16, 2016 8:27 am

Can anyone help with the exact date that the Football Association ended the amateur status of players in 1974? Was it 1 January 1974 or a date immediately prior to the start of the 1974/75 Season or indeed another date?

The change came in from the start of the 1974-75 season. The question therefore is: when did that season start?

Given season 1973-74 was a World Cup Year, and the final of that competition was held on 7 July, 1974, 8 July, 1974 might be a good bet for the start date.

Of course, England didn't qualify for the 1974 World Cup, so, perhaps in England the start date of season 1974/75 was different - maybe 1 July? Or, if you accept the annual FA Charity Shield game as marking the official start of a new season, then 1 August, 1974, the date of the match that season - the celebrated "punch-up" between Leeds United and Liverpool, might be the date.
