1979 CUP FINAL

Post by LEATHERSTOCKING » Sun Dec 15, 2013 3:30 pm

If the 2nd replay of the Hibs/Rangers Cup Final in 1979 had ended drawn, would there have been a 3rd replay or did the SFA propose a penalty shoot out?

I think the plan was to replay until only two fans turned up, one from each side, who could then fight to the death on the open terraces on live television. Sort of SFA Hunger Games.

Hibs still wouldn't have won it.

Och I know that. As the contestants raced across the crumbling concrete to the stash of weapons the Rangers fan would have grabbed a massive chib while the Hibby went straight for the can of pale ale.

The second replay was on the Monday and the third replay was scheduled for the Thursday. Of course Hibs played Rangers on the Thursday in a re-arranged League match at Easter Road. If a third replay had been needed the League game would have been bounced into the first week of June.

Was it decided after this to go to penalty shoot-outs and no replays?

I'm surprised that penalty shoot-outs or golden goals (aka "next goal's the winner") weren't standard earlier given the numerous cases of umpteen replays and, quite likely, more difficult travel.

Think they just introduced ET in all final ties?

There was a replay a couple of years later in the 1980-81 final. First final settled on penalties was in 1989-90 which was also the first season in which 2nd (onward) replays were abolished, and also the first season with penalties in any round. (Was that, like England a couple of seasons later, caused by police requiring replays were 10-11 days later not 3-4 days? Or just people getting fed-up?).

This topic was touched on over on Pie & Bovril a few weeks ago, it seemed the SFA usually changed tact in response to a particularly severe case... So after the abandoned 1909 Final (OF riot) extratime was introduced in Final replays. [But there was ET in the 1947-48 final and its 1st replay: was this due to continuing restrictions on midweek games or travel?]. After the 1979 Rangers-Hibs double replay, ET was introduced in all final ties. After the 2007 Hibs-Dunfermline 'debacle', replays were abolished in SFs.

Unsure when ET was introduced in 2nd (onward) replays, then all replays, in earlier rounds. Or when Semi-Final 2nd (onward) replays abolished.

Which we won.
