What's the origin of the name Queen of The South and their nickname The Doonhamers?

According to their official website the name is derived from an election address by a local poet in 1857 who described the town of Dumfries as the Queen of the South and the nickname caught on.

Dumfries people working away from the area would refer to the twon as 'doon hame' (down home) and themselves as doonhamers. The term now refers to Dumfries citizens generally.

Supporters of the club like to point out that (in English language versions at least) that theirs is the only UK football club to be mentioned in the Bible:
