Postby Sat31March1928 » Mon Feb 04, 2008 6:03 pm

I received the following e-mail

"Thought you might like a few details of my great uncle, George Clark
Robertson, for your interesting website on Scottish international
players.

George was born on 7th March 1885 in the village of Menstrie,
Clackmannanshire where his father was a joiner and his mother the local
midwife.
He played for the village team Menstrie Victoria (Vics) before moving
through to the west of Scotland.
He was signed by Motherwell from junior club Yoker Athletic in 1906.
Made a scoring debut for Motherwell in a 1-1 draw against Airdrie on 1st
September 1906.
Became the first Motherwell player to be capped for Scotland, against
Wales at Rugby Park, Kilmarnock, on 5th March 1910
(his colleague James Murray was Motherwell's first capped player a few
weeks earlier but for Ireland)
Transferred to The Wednesday on 22nd March 1910. Debut against Bradford
City on 25th March 1910.
Three further Scottish caps with The Wednesday before his release in
November 1919.
Signed for East Fife, at that time playing in the Central League, 16th
October 1920.
Played in East Fife's first ever Scottish League Match, against Bathgate
Thistle, on 20th August 1921.
Released by East Fife in June 1922 and later emigrated to the USA."

This is really useful information - it updates the listing in Doug Lamming's Who's Who, not only giving a date of birth but also correcting the place of birth and giving a middle name.

Don't suppose you could email back and ask if there is a place and date of death?

I will do. I also have a photo of him with his cap.

There's nothing like updating an old thread!

I found a note of his death in the 1937/38 Motherwell handbook, he died in Providence, Rhode Island, in May 1937 (exact date not given). He had emigrated there in 1922 with his wife Jessie and family.

I have the Robertson who played in East Fife's first ever league fixture in August 1921 as a John B. Robertson (source: John Litster's database)...

Thanks to a very helpful archivist in Providence, Rhode Island, I now have a precise date of death for George Clark Robertson: 10 May 1937.
