Scotland squad for the 1954 World Cup

Postby Anderson's Tavern » Tue Nov 28, 2006 1:55 pm

Does anyone know the identity of the 13 men who actually travelled to Switzerland. Obviously Martin, Cunningham, Aird, Docherty, Davidson, Cowie, McKenzie, Fernie, Mochan, Brown and Ormond played in both games, while I am pretty sure George Hamilton also travelled, as a replacement for Bobby Johnstone. However, I have seen both Celtic's Bobby Evans and Leicester's John Anderson noted as the other non-playing tourist. :?

Can anyone confirm who all made the ill-fated trip.

George Hamilton & Bobby Evans were the two squad players who travelled but didn't play.

Anderson was one of eight players on 'stand-by.' The others were: Binning (QOS), Combe (Hibs), Copland (Raith), Henderson, Wilson (both Portsmouth), McMillan (Airdrie) & Mathers (Partick)

Scotland could have sent 22 players which was the permitted FIFA maximum but for reasons best known to themselves the SFA sent only thirteen.

This one's probably up there with also using thick woollen jerseys and the non-participation in 1950 as they weren't British Champions.

Even worse. If you count Bobby Johnstone then there were 22 players listed. Fred Martin was the only goalkeeper!

England only took 17 with them, leaving five on stand-by, though they did have the sense to include a second goalkeeper (albeit uncapped) in the travelling group.

South Korea took 20 players. All other countries had the full 22.

So there isn't even an excuse along the lines of ' we knew no better than' or 'everyone else did it.'
