Jack Tarbatt, 1937-38

This man played for New York Brookhattan in the 1936-37 American Soccer League. Although his son insists that he played for a Scottish club the following year, I can't find anything on him. Can anyone help?

There was a J Torbet played a couple of games for Ayr United but he had been with them for a while. Perhaps if the two seasons didn't overlap he might be your man.

Thanks David. Do you have the seasons he played for Ayr, and do you know if he also appeared at Junior level?

Don’t know if its the same player, Brian, but here are his career details.John Torbet, born Benwhat 25/09/1903, signed for Partick Thistle from Cumnock. Thistle official history says “ David Ness from Irvine had arrived on the scene via Nithsdale Wanderers. He was an outside-right. On the opposite flank was another Ayrshireman, John Torbet from Dalmellington. Each was to give Thistle sterling service over many years.”

In Torbet’s case for nine full seasons – 1924-25-32-33 inclusive - and 269 appearances and 116 goals. Those are for ALL competitions and include Glasgow & Charity Cups. League 212A 91G – top scorer three times – 28-29, 30-31, 32-33. SC 22A 15G including the 1930 SCF replay. GC 10A 2G. CC 6A 1G. Those don’t add up to the totals in the Thistle book. Perhaps Cinneide can explain. I imagine its because Thistle totals are for absolutely everything.

Then on to Preston North End (then in the English 2nd division) for 1933-34 and 11A 4G in the league. He had a spell outside the league with Burton Town then signed for Third North Stockport County in 1935-36 and 6A 1G. He made no FA Cup appearances for any of the English sides.

He signed for Ayr United in January 1936 and 11A, 4G that season. I don’t know how many games he played in the 2nd division in 1936-37 but it must have been a fair number as the Ayr history has him scoring 22 goals. In 1937-38 he made two appearances and no goals.

That’s when he disappears off the Scottish radar. He would have been 34 years old. According to Since 1888 he died in 1957 but there is no place of death listed.

John McDowell Torbet also played for Leith Athletic in 1937-38 after leaving Ayr; I'm not sure what happened to him after that.

Apologies - I meant to reply to this.

I doubt its the same player - I have no note of Torbet playing in the US. His career is fairly well covered above, with the exception of a single game for Alloa between his free from Ayr and his game for Leith.

He was working for Thornliebank Youth Club during the war.

I have a suspicion he may have joined Hearts as trainer - see http://scottishleague.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=852 - I'd love to have this confirmed.

Re discrepancies in his Thistle stats - his appearances and goals totals in the book contain first team friendlies.
