Here We (Don’t) Go

Yes, the SPL is still every bit the farce it was last time we updated these pages. No, we still don’t know whether there will be any promotion or relegation. Perhaps the Setanta deal is a good one. Maybe it isn’t. True, Scotland ended the season on a high. Also true we don’t really know if we’ll be good enough come the World Cup qualifiers.

But nothing is going to change on these matters in the next few days, so this is the occasion for this website to look back on Scotland and the European Championships currently being played in Portugal. After all we can hardly look forward, seeing as this is the third successive major Finals we’ve missed out on and our bid to host the 2008 competition was dead in the water before it was even launched.

So, instead of working out how we will fare among the continent’s elite, we’ll roll back the decades and have a wallow in history. Which, when all’s said and done, is probably preferable to discussing the merits of giving Gavin Rae a man-marking job on Zinedine Zidane.

At just over 5,000 words and a few illustrations and weighing in at just over 1.5MB, it's a bit too long for a web page so we’ve put it online as a pdf file. Click the link to download 'A short history of Scotland and the European Championship.'
