Scottish Record Transfers

Post by DensParker » Tue May 18, 2021 9:57 am

Is there an extensive list kicking around? Very surprised I've never seen one before.

Then Dundee manager George Anderson said when we signed Billy Steel in 1950, it was a Scottish transfer record and the Courier and Sunday Post both said it was for £23,000.

But I was looking to see what record we beat and who then went on to best our record.

I dont know if anyone beat it, in between George McLeans transfer to Rangers in 1963 from St Mirren and Dundee topped that again with the money they paid for Charlie Cooke from Aberdeen with the money they received from Spurs for Gilzeans transfer . I think possibly one of the Smiths that Rangers signed in 1966 was a record and then both Alex Ferguson & Colin Stein in 67 & 68 held the record until Joe Harpers transfer to Hibs from Everton had the record in 1974 .

There was a previous post on the progression of the Scottish record transfer fee (see "The British transfer record").

Billy Steel’s transfer fee (shown there as £17,500) beat the £10,000 paid by Hibs to Clyde for Leslie Johnstone in January 1947. Jim Baxter went to Rangers from Raith Rovers for £18,000 in June 1960.
