A common "fact" about the English Cup is that when Wanderers won it for the third time in succession in 1878 and therefore under the rules at the time could keep it they offered to give it back to the FA on the proviso that this rule be obliterated. Almost every newspaper match report states that the FA refused the offer and that they promised a new trophy for the 1878-79 competition. Did Wanderers in fact keep the cup and did the FA then order a new one?
